Recent insurance dispute trends are a timely reminder that the quality of a policy is only tested when a claim is made.
For Australian tradies, that means it is worth looking beyond the premium and checking how cover, exclusions, evidence requirements and claims timeframes would work in a real job-site problem.

Industry reporting on complaints handled through the Australian Financial Complaints Authority continues to show familiar pressure points across general insurance. Disputes often arise where customers disagree with claim decisions, experience delays, or find that policy limits and definitions do not work the way they expected. While many of these matters involve household cover, the lessons carry across to small trade businesses that depend on vehicles, tools, equipment, liability protection and income continuity.

For a sole trader or small crew, a delayed or disputed claim can quickly become a cash flow issue. A stolen trailer, damaged ute, injured customer or tools lost in a site break-in can stop work, affect deadlines and put pressure on client relationships. If the claim then turns on whether an item was listed, where it was stored, whether a sub-limit applies, or whether the right evidence has been provided, the practical cost can be far greater than the excess shown on the schedule.

The key takeaway is not that every claim will be difficult. It is that tradies should prepare before there is a problem. Keep photos, serial numbers and receipts for major tools and equipment. Update values when gear is replaced or upgraded. Check whether tools are covered in vehicles overnight, on site, in transit and in storage. For liability cover, confirm that the business activities listed on the policy match the work actually being performed, including subcontracting, height work, excavation or hot works if relevant.

It is also worth taking time at renewal to estimate practical cover levels rather than simply rolling over last year’s figures. Inflation in replacement costs, new contracts, extra workers and different job types can all change the exposure. A policy that suited a one-person operation may not fit the same business after it has added apprentices, bought plant or taken on larger projects.

Where wording is unclear, getting help from a licensed insurance broker can help tradies understand the difference between broad cover and cover that merely looks broad on a summary page. The aim is straightforward: fewer surprises, better records and a stronger position if a claim ever needs to be challenged.

Why Northern Strata Schemes Still Face Insurance Cost Pressure
Why Northern Strata Schemes Still Face Insurance Cost Pressure

Fresh industry attention on insurance affordability in northern Australia has reinforced a message many strata communities already understand: premium relief is not delivered by a single reform, even where government-backed risk sharing is in place. For apartment buildings, townhouse complexes and mixed-use strata schemes exposed to cyclone, storm surge, flood or severe rainfall, insurers are still looking closely at the physical characteristics of each building before deciding price, excesses and available cover. - read more

Australia’s financial advice reform agenda has moved from broad policy debate into the more practical question of how advice will be delivered, documented and accessed.
